Opal III

In 2009, after a development period of only 7 months, the prototype kit for the modernization of the Opal III was designed, tested, manufactured by FFG and handed over to the project partner HSW (Huta Stalowa Wola S.A.) on time and within budget.

Key features

  • Extremely short development phase
  • Increased safety standards

The OPAL III is a protected artillery command vehicle used by the Polish Army based on the MT-LB platform used worldwide. A significant increase in mobility and a reduction in operating costs were required.

For this purpose, the G4 power pack developed by FFG and which has already been used in numerous M113 modernization programs, was integrated into the vehicle. In addition to a powerful MTU engine, this also includes a new ZF transmission. To enable integration of the engine and transmission, the front of the vehicle was completely redesigned by FFG. In addition to the space required for the power pack, FFG focused here on a user-friendly solution that facilitates maintenance and power pack replacement.

In addition to the main components engine and transmission, FFG also renewed the fire extinguishing system, vehicle lighting, cooling system, ventilation with air filtration, and hydraulics. In the course of this, the outlets for combustion exhaust gases and cooling air were relocated. In addition, the vehicle was equipped with a new brake system to meet the latest safety requirements.
